"It was a very nice hotel and the rooms were very comfortable. BUT there was minimal maid service. The room was clean when we arrived. The first day they made the bed and took the trash and towels but did not vacuum or replace the towels or coffee. The next they did absolutely nothing!! Very disappointing."

"Came from the airport on the BART and the hotel was only 3 blocks from the Powell station. The hotel location is great. The bus stops are very convenient, the cable car stops 3 blocks south of the hotel, and resturants and shopping are all very close to the hotel. The staff was very nice and helped us get around the city by giving us some walking and bus tips and directions.
We had a historic double room which was very large and the beds were comfortable. The bathrooms were small and the hotel had a old fashioned (musty?) smell to it - but what can you expect from a historic hotel?
Overall it was a great stay and I would definitely stay here again."

"Steer clear of the petite guest room unless you want to be tripping over your bags (a-la paris style). Be aware of the protests that occur from 7am in the 'square' on weekends- if you don't mind being woken early that's fine. Room was clean, nice big TV - but lots of foot traffic past my door all night (may have just been room 619) which had me worried as a lone female traveler with the number of locks on the door and no secure swipe access in the lift. Otherwise, right in the middle of town, walk to everything and easy cable car access. Asking for a train timetable at the front desk I didn't get a helpful response from the lady, but the other guy was nice and printed an email for me. So overall, I wouldn't rush back here but it was okay."

"Arrived here after a long drive up the coast and so just wanted to get parked up and into our rooms. The staff were very friendly and receptive to this and got us parked up and brought our cases up for us very efficiently.
We had adjoining rooms which was appreciated by both my partner and I and naturally by our children as it allowed us both our own space and yet the comfort of knowing that we were in the next room. Rooms were clean and spacious and the beds comfortable.
Location was brilliant, right on Union Square, so that everything was in easy reach.
Children loved the pool and the Daily Grill is worth trying.

"We began the start of our honeymoon by staying San Francisco for 3 nights in July. We were very excited to explore the city and the Handlery Union Square Hotel was the perfect location to do so. The hotel is down the street from great restaurants, shopping and the cable car stops. This hotel is not close to Fishermans Warf, although it is not that far either. Its just the hills that you have to walk up to get to Fisherman's Warf.
Since we were traveling for our honeymoon we were lucky enough to receive a phone class from the manager making sure we were comfortable in our room and enjoying our trip so far. Champange, glasses and a welcome bag with snacks was also brought to the room. It was so nice! Thank you Handlery for starting off our Honeymoon in such a memorable way!"

" We stayed for 4 nights and was only supposed to get a very small room, but since it was my birthday trip, the front desk was nice enough to upgrade us to a bigger room. Everything went well except on the day of my bday, there were noisy protesters across the street who woke us up very early. When we got back from our Napa tour..tired, they were still there...very noisy. We complained and they moved us to a suite next door, which was a lot more quiet, and the nice manager even sent up a bottle of champagne to celebrate my bday! However, housekeeping wasn't very careful because they gave us an extra blanket that was torn up badly. The staff was nice to apologize about it. The rooms could also use some nice freshener. I also like the Concierge, and the Bell Man. Overall our stay was great! Great location too!!"

"Our stay at the Handlery was for 8 nights and for 4 people. Although the room size was big enough this hotel offered no dresser draws and we were forced to live out of our suitcases for this entire time. This hotel seemed to be more set up for business guests as no information on San Francisco was provided at all by the hotel.Not when you checked in, not in the lobby nor in the room. The conceirge was not very friendly and very basic.
Location was great and front desk and housekeeping were very friendly. Overall I would recommend this hotel."

"Location location location. Room and bathroom was cramped with family of 4 in a double room but we didn't spend much time in there! Clean room and nice staff. "This hotel is located in the heart of Union Square. Easy access to all of the public transportation. If you plan on spending most of your time at the Fishermans Wharf you may want to stay closer to that area. Trolleys are $6.00 a head, this is steep for those traveling with a family. Buses are $2.00 a head.
The hotel feel is more towards business travelers. Information for the area was not provided when we checked in, nor do they have available in the lobby area. The concierge was not very friendly or helpful. Lastly, we were a family of four and although the room size was adequate there are no dresser draws to put clothes away. We were four people living out of suitcases for a week, very frustrating.
Overall the hotel provided a nice stay."

The room was small but was clean and provided a comfortable bed, small fridge and a safe.
We had a city view that was a little on the noisy side due to a protest every morning for 1 hour between 7am and 8am.
The location of the hotel was absolutely perfect with the Bart Station only a few blocks away that takes you to and from the airport. The cable car stop was right on the corner and they always had room for a couple of people even though it was lined up at the previous stop down the street. I would stay again at this hotel."

"Wow, what a location. We could not have picked a better location for our hotel. Very close to top end department stores, Union Square, pubs and any type of food you want all are within walking distance. Easy walk to public transportation. We stayed in room 457 which was large enough for the two of us and luggage. Room and bath both were very clean and updated with fresh paint and wallpaper. Not much of a view from the window but that was fine because we left the roon each day around 9AM and returned around 9 PM. We were looking for a clean place to sleep and found it. I loved the glass door knobs and the little vent on the bathroom door. We would chat with one of the bellmen each morning on our way out. I failed to get his name but he was most helpful with suggestions for the day. He was an older gentleman and was most often at the outside door at the sidewalk. We would stay at this hotel again if we visit San Francisco again."

"Not what we remembered the hotel to be like, The room was ok, other then smelling of smoke, so they moved us right away, no question's asked, into a room with a Shower that was so small that a 175 pound person could not move in it. the air did not work, we had to call them for that. and the noise, OMGosh 7am crazy. and what happened to the plushness, all gone. very unattractive Bedding. But we will give it another try, due to the Manager on Duty that said he would take good care of us if we return, Thank you very much for that, The Dining was wonderful, great service, At night and in the morning. very good waiter's."

"The location is fantastic. You're centrally located to just about everything you would like to see or do. This was our second stay this year and both visits were outstanding. Ask for a room that doesn't face the street, the noise can be quite intense. We were put away from the street both times and were very comfortable. "The hotel was absolutely beautiful. The staff offered us a very warm welcome and our rooms were fantastic. Clean and very comfortable, although our refrigerator didnt work. The only thing that I could say of a negative nature was the fact that there was a lot of outside noise. Protestors outisde the hotel which is opposite this hotel woke us at 7am on a Saturday morning. The noise was so loud they may as well been in the room with us. There was absolutely no way anyone could sleep through that. Double glazed windows would have made all the difference for the comfort of guests. Apart from that, great and I would recommend the hotel definitely but would suggest guests ask for rooms off the street."

"We stayed in a Historic Queen room at the Handlery Union Square during our recent 5-night stay in San Francisco. We got a great deal and the downtown location was very convenient. The room was small and the bed could have been more comfortable, but overall we had a great experience. We didn't spend much time in the room - instead, spending most of our time exploring this awesome city! But, the concierge was very helpful when one of the restaurants we wanted to go to was closed and they were helpful in advising an area to avoid that our travel guide had not mentioned (Tenderloin area). I think the $10 per day charge for WiFi access was excessive, especially considering that San Fran is such a wired city. The room was clean and nice and satisfied our needs. Overall, a good 'home base' if you're looking to explore San Francisco!"

"if you are old or handicapped stay on bottom floor,had to go from parking to the basement then up to an elevator,to our room,otherwise you have 14 stairs. the room slantrd on the 7th floor so much i fell over everytime i walked the room, did not sleep all night, she said it was a quiet room, doors slammed every 20 mins. soda machines at 2.00 apop didnt work on our floor had to walk. very miserable stay."

"My family of 4 stayed for our spring break. Overall, it was a nice stay, our complaints are the nickel and dimed feeling we had at every turn. We got a great rate, but then w/ the roll away ($10/day) and parking charges, plus the 'oversize vehicle surcharge of an extra $9 per day AND the $10 / day charge for WI/FI...(guess who didn't get wi/fi) it got a little frustrating. By the time we checked out and without incurring any other hotel charges, besides the roll-away and parking we paid an extra $250.00, because we were taxed on the extra charges as well :/ We stayed in the Historic Double Double. The beds were comfortable, but quite small for the 4 of us, so we asked for a roll-away ($10 per night extra)! There was absolutely no storage for our clothing besides a very small closet, so needless to say, we lived out of our suitcases for the 4 nights we were there. The kids used the pool once which was a great break in the day. The staff was helpful and the restaurant was good although we only had lunch there once. The noise level was managable with earplugs, but better than I had expected."

"The hotel was nice but the walk with our bags from the parking garage was bad. The elevator was out so we had to carry our bags up and down 2 sets of stairs. The other working elevator also dosent stop on the floor correctly, it kept stopping and leaving a 3 to 5 inch step up which my girlfriend tripped over. The parking is a joke, $45 to park at the hotel after spending $190 on the room. It was a surprise that they dont tell you in advance."

"I paid what I felt was top-dollar for this reservation; the room was basic, the doorman never once opened the door for me; the bathroom sink wouldnt drain and there was a water leak that flooded the counter-top every night, the TV never worked....I ended up getting locked out of my room (they disabled my keycard), and they attempted to remove my luggage (even though I had an approved late check-out). The staff was very friendly, but they never actually did anything to help the situation. There are better hotels for your money in the area."

"The Handlery is a gem of a destination. Just off Union Square, it is handy to everything you want to do in San Francisco ( sightsee, dine, have drinks, theatre, shopping and Union Square is the meeting space for many tours)...Or you can hop the Powell or Hyde Street cable cars to Fisherman's Wharf. The Handlery staff delivered in spades on everything we asked for in a friendly, helpful manner. Room was a premier with balcony well away from the elevators, ice machine and street which made for a quiet and comfortable stay. Comfortable bed, spacious room, pleasantly scented soap and toiletries and a real fridge for our own pop and late nite snacks. Oh yes, we will return!"

"This was my second stay at The Handlery, the first being 16 years ago.
It does not pretend to be a plush, top class hotel but is a super place to stay in San Francisco. I would have no doubts about basing myself there again when I return.
Brilliant value and absolutely no complaints.
I was lucky enough to hit three days perfect weather so if staying at The Handlery get busy in the morning around the city and if you want an hour or two lying in the sun get down by the pool around 3:30 p.m. when the sun hits it - at least in late March.
Very handy for everything:
- cable cars running up the side of Union square (about 50 yards from the hotel),
- buses and trams 2/3 blocks down to e.g. the piers (tram 'F' 2 dollars, 75 cents
retired) or a number 5 bus to Golden Gate Park (same price),
- shops to die for around Union Square (my adult daughter said 'there is every
shop anyone could ever want' - I hate shopping!!).
- theatres and art galleries adjacent to hotel on Geary street.
A really great value hotel in a perfect position."

"My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Handlery Union Square Hotel recently in San Francisco.The hotel was smack in downtown which we wanted and excess to public transportation, shopping malls and restaurants was very convenient. "My husband and I stay at The Handlery for 3 nights from 26th September this year, after a long flight from London we arrived at the hotel. Hotel is an a fantastic position to Union Square. We stayed on 5th floor and the room was right by the elevator and next to the ice machine, but surprisingly we heard no noise or disturbance from either.
We stayed in an Historic Queen, which was in the main building, the room was an ok size with a large bathroom. Room was very clean, apart from a 'make do' closet which was a little scruffy. Bed and pillows were too soft for us, but that is just my opinion.
We visited the pool every day, but the trouble was there was no sun that time of year until just after 4, and it was boiling when we visited about 90 each day!
All in all a good clean 3 star hotel in a fantastic city.

"Went to the Handlery for my sister's batchelorette party, and the accommodations were perfect for our needs - beautiful rooms, amazing view, and overall very friendly staff. The only downer was getting a knock on our door telling us we'd made too much noise (we were opening presents, and my sister was letting out an occasional squeal - pretty normal stuff - nothing raucous), and it was only 9pm on a Friday night. Very weird. But besides that, it was everything we could have wanted for a comfortable stay and a fun evening out on the town."

"This hotel was amazing! Just as you see it on the internet. It reminded us of Melrose Place with the pool right in the Centre. The surrounds were beautiful and there were lots of colourful flowers everywhere, which looked beautiful. It is in a great location, right next to Union Square and within in walking distance to everything! Great price, great staff, rooms were newly renovated and very clean. The beds were really comfortable. I wouldn`t stay in the room next to the lifts as they are very noisey! No free internet!!! Which is a shame with Wi fi everywhere you need your own laptop or ipad.
We would definitely stay here again, we loved San Franscisco.

"We stayed in an 'Historic Double Double' which was small, but well-appointed. We were not upgraded. The location is EXCELLENT. The one thing that would dissuade us from staying here again is the parking garage setup. We had to take an elevator from the garage to the 2nd floor, go through the halls of the first building, pass the swimming pool into the next building, schlep our bags down two flights of stairs, navigate through a maze of hallways to get to the lobby. Each time we needed to use our car, we had to make this same trip back to the garage and then back to our room when we returned. Pretty ridiculous. And dangerous when you're traveling with your 91-year old mother for a birthday celebration in the city. Fortunately, we called the front dest for assistance as we were checking out and they sent someone who took us through the underbelly of the hotel and directly to the garage. That was a much better, albeit long and inconvenient, route. The location was the best part of staying here. I would recommend this hotel ONLY if the traveler didn't need to bring their vehicle to the hotel."

"We just came back from our first visit to San Francisco. We didn't rent a car. From airport we took BART to Powell St and walked 2 blocks to the hotel. BART cost $8.10 per person. We were in the old part of the hotel and yes, some rooms are small. Our room was upgraded upon arrival to nice queen size room with seating area and computer desk. If you want to have internet in your room, You need to pay about $10 a day. No balcony and windows in the room are off the street so we didn't have any trouble sleeping. Yes, a little bit dark, but comfortable room. When I was packing back, I found an empty bottle behind the chair that wasn't ours. This means that previous guest left it there, so whomever cleaned the room, didn't move the chairs. The rest was fine, bed nicely done everyday and clean bathroom. Hotel is half a block from Union Square and cable cars. All other transportation (muni) is also close by. Hotel has a small pool, but we didn't use it as it wasn't warm enough. Walking distance to museums, shops, all kinds of places for a quick meal or a fancy dinner. Cable car ride costs $6 one way, but you can buy daily passes or few days passes. If You are planning to visit San Francisco before October 9, 2011 - Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco de Young hosts exhibition of more than 150 masterpieces by Pablo Picasso - bus that takes you there is also close to Handlery Union Hotel. For first timers, you can walk to Fisherman Wharf and pier 39 from the Hotel but it will take you about 40 minutes one way on the up and down roads... we did a lot of walking. Handlery Union Square Hotel has perfect location and it is excellent starting point for all your San Francisco adventures. In San Francisco is cloudy in the morning, then nice September sun, and You need to come back to hotel or buy a jacket for the evening if You didn't bring one with you. Windy, windy, windy especially on the waterfront. Overall, we had a very good time in San Francisco. Location wise, we got very good price by booking this hotel through bookit.com. We were there for 5 nights and there was no time to see all that we wanted, so there is a good reason for a second visit. "

"The Handlery Hotel was great. It is a good location to catch a bus or the BART. The rooms are very nice and clean. The first room was a little small and staff readily changed our room to one we really enjoyed. It was right over the front of the hotel on the 2nd floor (#215). We were able to look out and see and hear all the city life. This would not be a room for someone who needs quiet, but we loved it. Staff was pleasant. My only complaint would be the charge for WiFi. Oh well it kept me off the internet on my vacation! I would recommend this hotel and if I get back to San Francisco I would stay there again."
