"We just got back (last night) from staying at the Riu Tequila, which we absolutely would recommend you staying at the resort.
We went with another couple (ages 24-27) and found the entertainment at night was lacking, except on the last night they had a circus performance, which we enjoyed. The entertainment during the week was poor.
The food, drinks and atmosphere is amazing and they have a golf cart that takes you to the beach (1 min) or 5 min walk.

"Could not have had a better vacation than this. My checking all the categories as 5/excellent doesn't tell the whole story. I have stayed in Cancun on 3 different occasions and at more expensive resorts. However, this vacation at the RIU Tequila was far and away the best. The food was excellent without exception. The chefs took a lot of pride in the variety, quality and presentation of each and every meal. You won't find a friendlier staff anywhere. The entire staff went well out of their way to please. The drinks were top shelf and the accommodations were kept pristine. From the resort manager down to the pool boys and the room maids, the attention was always to satisfy the guests. Kudos to the entire staff for making this our most enjoyable and relaxing vacation. By the way.......if anyone tells you that the food was always the same, don't believe it. The variety was always extensive. In writing this review I feel I must also list any negatives I experienced. NONE...except maybe using a little fabric softener when washing the bath towels. FIVE THUMBS UP."

"Overall the hotel was good for the price. Stayed there for about a week and had great vacation. The buffett was average, you wil get sick of eating it on a daily basis. But that's ok because it will give you a reason to go into town and explore like i did. I rented a bike for a whole day and you can ride it to downtown 5th ave which is a quick 15 minute ride."

"This was our first time to a beach resort. Our objective was to find a nice quiet spot--we requested a quiet room and we got it. The rooms were in 2 story buildings--all the physical facilities were in top shape. Cleanliness and food were superb. All you could eat every meal. This resort is not right on the beach--about 250 yard walk down a pathway. A shuttle is available but not always available. They have one but need three. But down the path you are at 3 other Riu hotels all on the beach. Two of these you can use and one you could not. For the ones you can use--you can use their beach toys (catamarrans, etc) which we did. We are sailors. However you couldn't go very far away. You can also dine there (a total of 3 dining halls on the beach), use their beachside pool, use lounge chairs, whatever. They are also in association with Scruba caribe which teaches and takes you out for scube--for an extra fee of course. But these were well and professionally conducted. We did scuba also and it was worth it. We also took a tour to Tulum and Acukmal, and this you should do. We also rented bicycles twice and took the ferry to Cozumel Island. We stayed 2 weeks, but 10 days would have been about right. In review: The upside: quiet, family friendly, staff, food is excellent--nothing negative here, and you get to use the facilities of 3 resorts if desired. The downside: it is not right on the beach. This is a nice area of Cancun because it is not in Cancun but South next door to Playa del Carmen, a more quaint village. Again, we wanted peacefulness. Hopefully this helps."

"Don't ya just love it when a plan comes together? Our plan was as follows, we pay now and relax later. It all came together as planned at the Riu Tequila. Our 2nd stay at a Riu. We were impressed with our first Riu stay in the Bahamas so we choose Riu again for Mexico. We found the grounds, rooms, dinning hall to be clean and well maintained. The staff very friendly and helpful. Made us feel like they cared about our plan. Oh yea the plan. Close to Playa for shopping which we took advantage of the first day. Then we relaxed by the pool. Then we relaxed by the beach. Then we relaxed at dinner. Got so worn out we went to bed early and missed all the shows. Loved the lush gardens and pleasant shaded walkways.
Biggest shortfall? Its not on the beach. Big deal, they have a shuttle. Oh the room was equipped with an old style 26' tube TV. And the room door opened with a real key not a key card.
Best features? the staff, the pool, close to Playa, the grounds, the food.
Great vacation."

"Everything was top-notch from the great entertainment to the beautiful beach area. The only complaints would be the cats in the dining room, (people actually feeding them?!) and the long walk to the beach (about 10-15 minutes). They had a shuttle tram but it didn't run long or often enough.The staff was very friendly and the houskeeping was as good as we have ever had anywhere."

"Food is OK but redundant - not much choice for lunch; aside from the fantastic maids, the staff here were 'extremely rude' and outright bold; the RIU Tequila staff are actually ignorant! Don't believe it was a language issue if the hotel replies to this review because comments like 'don't ever come in here without footwear' and 'don't touch our water jugs' (after asking 3 times for water) was definitely the culmination of our experience at this resort and created an atmosphere not conducive to a traveling family of 6 just looking for some peace and quiet for a much-needed vacation. The management provided little relief and offered no help with issues.

The rooms are clean, booze and refreshments in the rooms are aplenty (aside from coffee - if you're a coffee drinker, there's no coffee maker in the rooms and it is a LONG walk to get something that is very less than adequate :) We will not return - I would recommend Blue Bay or anything else within Playacar.

Take the advice of a well-traveled Aviation representative with plenty of experience and not hard to please, find another resort. Cheers and happy vacations!"
